How to Install a Truck Bed Cover on a Ford F-250 or F-350 Super Duty (No Drilling Required)

The Short Answer
Thunder Armor’s truck bed cover uses a clamp-based mounting system that attaches directly to the bed rail with no drilling, no permanent modification, and no specialized tools. Most installs take under an hour. A lot of owners do it in 30 minutes or less.
Here’s exactly what to expect.
What You’ll Need
Everything required for the installation ships in the box. Before you start, pull out and organize the following:
- Powder coated heavy-gauge aluminum folding panel assembly with latches
- Powder coated heavy-gauge aluminum mounting rails
- Complete hardware and clamp kit
- Seal kit
- Installation instructions
You’ll also want a basic set of hand tools on the bench — a socket wrench or ratchet and a measuring tape are the main ones. Nothing specialty, nothing that requires a trip to the hardware store.

Prepare the Bed Rails
Before anything goes on the truck, give the top surface of both bed rails a quick wipe-down. Debris, grit, or moisture trapped under the mounting rails can affect how the seal sits and how secure the clamps feel once tightened. A clean, dry rail surface takes about two minutes and makes a real difference in the finished install. Lower the tailgate and leave it open — you’ll need full access to the bed during the install.

Position the Mounting Rails
The aluminum mounting rails run the length of the bed on each side, sitting on top of the bed rails. No drilling into the bed rail surface,; the clamps handle all the retention. Set both rails in position and confirm they’re aligned front to back before tightening anything down. On the F-250 and F-350, the rails are designed to sit just inside the stake pockets along the bed side wall, check your specific year’s instruction sheet for exact positioning, as the 6’8” standard bed and 8’ long bed have slightly different reference points. Confirm everything is square and even on both sides before moving to clamps.

Attach the Clamps
Thunder Armor uses a clamp-based system that tightens against the underside of the bed rail. The clamps are included in the hardware kit, pre-sorted for the install sequence. Working from the front of the bed toward the tailgate, attach and hand-tighten each clamp before final torque; this keeps the rails in position while you work down the line. Once all clamps are hand-tight and the rail position looks right, go back and torque each one down fully. Snug and firm, no need to overtighten. Repeat on the other side.

Install the Panel Assembly
With the rails secure, the folding panel assembly drops into position on top of the rails at the front of the bed, against the cab end. The front edge of the panel assembly engages with the front mounting point on the rails. Lower the assembly into place and confirm it’s seated evenly on both sides. The panels should sit flush with the top of the rails without any gap or lean to either side. If something looks off, check that both rails are at the same height, that’s usually the culprit.

Install the Seal Kit
The seal kit includes weatherstripping for the tailgate and side edges, this is what creates the all-weather seal between the cover and the bed. Apply the tailgate seal first, then the side seals, following the sequence in the instruction sheet. The seals are adhesive-backed and apply cleanly to the rail surface. Press firmly along the full length and give the adhesive a few minutes to set before closing the cover for the first time.

Test the Latches and Fold
Close the cover from front to back and engage the dual rear latches at the tailgate. The latches should close cleanly and hold firmly. Give the tailgate-end of the cover a lift to confirm the latch is holding; it should resist without any play. Fold the cover open in its three sections toward the cab to confirm the fold mechanism works smoothly and the panels stay up without assistance. Fold it back down, latch it, raise the tailgate. You’re done.
How to Remove the Cover
Same process, reversed
Detach the latches, fold the panels, lift the assembly off the rails, then loosen and remove the clamps. The rails lift off the bed. The bed surface underneath is completely unmodified; no holes, no marks, nothing that affects the truck’s condition or resale value.
This is exactly why no-drill installation matters. The truck is always the truck. The cover is an accessory, not a permanent alteration.
